Anime recommendations needed

So I’m flying off to Japan for six months soon and my access to english subbed anime is going to be very limited. Any recommendations for anime? Doesnt have to be bl-related, I like anything thought-provoking or intelligent. 🙂

  1. PSYCHO-PASS (If you haven’t watched it, it’s set in a futuristic world where the humanity values are different from our current values and it got me thinking about our humanity’s possible future)

[C]: Control – The Money of Soul and Possibility (It’s a financial-based Pokemon/Digimon-ish style but the antagonist has some values that I both agree and disagree on)

  2. shingeki no kyojin: if you haven’t already watched it, it’s really good.
so there are these giant humanoid creature which devour humans for no apparent reason. This anime follows the protagonist Eren Yeager and his mission to eradicate the titans.
but this anime isn’t like other anime. It has an amazing plot and all these mysteries pop up and it’s so confusing.
if you haven’t watched it you need to try it.

  3. No real recs (except marathonning my fave hobby horse Genshiken’s manga, or the Nidiame Anime will lack nuance. Instead a heads up.. Some of the eng-lang aggregator sites block +/or “this is licenced” notice when they detect a JP web connection. Sneaky.. some don’t though, so be prepared to hunt around. Have a good trip

Have a good trip, and the invite for a guest post is still on.

    • Hurhur, okay I’ll watch Genshiken now. Managed to grab a couple of episodes before I entered Japan so I’m all set!

Oh as in an invite to write for your site? Any themes in particular you have in mind?

      • The “sociology” post you did earlier was great: your statement that -some- of the relationship themes/ plots in what is considered a female fantasy of male/male love, held resonance for you (or did i misread?) was powerful and unexpected. I go by the standard studies in the field: %90+ of BL readers in Japan are supposed to be nominally straight women, the figure drops to %50 for “diaspora” readership., and that is just m/f ratio. That post widened the WHY, beyond a “simple answer”.

Otherwise, other topics suggest themselves, you may end up plowing through the Genshiken manga (the anime is a bit of a gloss) and finding it an obnoxious p.o.s for it’s creation of a weird fudanshi character – that’s fair too. Your opinion: the straight fudanshi – probable or improbable or complete farce.? All manner of folks; male female, gay and straight seem to be slowly getting drawn into what is at first glimpse an very improbable genre. (and I must admit that I am in more interested in the genre and its fujoshi creators than the content, but that s just me) There has got to be some reason besides the eye candy. What else? an update on Matt Thorn’s theory patch – how shojo manga-ish is the current BL stuff??

You have some familiarity with the theory-verse, and you may have noticed that the english language section of it, at least what does not lie behind paywalls has great gaping holes in it. Any obvious ones annoy?

I’m just pulling things out of the air. Sorry if I sound like I am looking for fodder for my pet project, I am just getting tired of the theory gang’s speculations, which are beginning to go circular. Time for some new points of view. drop a comment over at my mess if you have an idea and the time – no hurries, no worries, and besides, I would be surprised if more than 10 people read my blog anyway… Cheers and thanks.. /m

      • No problem, though I have to start watching the anime before I write anything, and that wouldn’t be anytime soon considering that I’m exploring Tokyo and my family is coming to visit me for the next 2 weeks. 🙂 Give me a while to settle in before I can resume my fudanshi habits again. 😛

  5. I really good anime (not BL, although I like that genre) is Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo. It’s a romantic comedy and is hilarious! I really hope you watch it 🙂
